SPCA
What is the SPCA?
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is any of a number of animal welfare organizations whose operations include protecting and providing shelter to animals in danger.
They are non-profit organizations that campaign for animal welfare and take in abused or abandoned animals, and help them to get adopted.
An animal shelter is an example of a SPCA.

How did the SPCA start and why? As early as the 1800's citizens noticed how horses were being treated on the streets, and how cattle were being used like machines. In 1822 "An Act to Prevent the Cruel and Improper Treatment of Cattle" was formed. Initially the concern was for cattle and horses and the cruelty they faced on a daily basis. This law helped to regulated the carriage-horse business. After the "Act of 1822" was passed, there were numerous countries in Europe that adopted some regulations regarding research with animals and abuse, and later laws and regulations were passed to enforce animal welfare. With this success, the Society expanded to include dogs and other animals in its fight against cruelty.
When did the SPCA start and where?
The first SPCA started in England in 1824 called the RSPCA ~ Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
All over the United States, and indeed all over the world there are so many organizations for animal welfare and cruelty, too many to name, but they all have the same common goal:
Helping our animals live in a safe, cruel-free environment, with shelter, food, warmth and lots of LOVE
Your local SPCA can be found by looking in the yellow pages or find them on the web.
