North Shore Animal League

North Shore Animal League is the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in the world. It has been helping animals for over 65 years, and to date the Animal League has found homes for almost one million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.

It started with a few animal lovers in Port Washington, New York forming a shelter in a garage with a few fenced outdoor runs.

Mission

The League’s mission has always been saving the lives of pets. As a NO_KILL animal rescue and adoption organization they needed to set up programs throughout communities and around the Nation to reach their goals.

A Glimpse of Some Programs

  • PET ADOPTATHON: The Pet-Adoptathon is held annually in an effort to save as many lives as possible. Thousand of shelters around the world joined the League by staying open for 36 hours straight. This year 620 animals were adopted from the result of this event.

  • PUBLIC EDUCATION TEAMS: The League travels to schools, camps, day care centers, and wherever else children are gathered to instruct them in the basics of pet care.

  • PET OUTREACH TEAMS: This group brings puppies to hospital wards, Alzheimer's and Cerebral Palsy centers, and other long-term care facilities where people are unable to experience the joys of pet ownership.

  • HELP ME HEAL PROGRAM: The Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center provides 24-hour medical care for animals in need, until they are healthy enough to be placed for adoption.

  • HELP FOR EVERY LITTLE PET ~ HELP: Sponsors can help foster a kitten or puppy until it is old enough to be cared for or a loving home is found.

  • SAFE HAVEN SURVIVING PET CARE: This is a care plan for anyone who has ever asked themselves, "Who will take care of Fido when I die"?

  • THE OLGA GRAHAM FUND: For Seniors who are on a limited income and want to adopt a pet, this program is for you.

  • BREED RESCUE: There are mutts and purebred dogs available at the League. If you are looking for a particular dog or a pedigree then maybe you would like to check out "PET FETCH", a database of purebred dogs.

  • TOUR FOR LIFE: The largest pet mobile adoption event.

    Celebrities Helping Out

So, what does Howard Stern and his wife Beth Ostrosky-Stern, Monica Seles and Martha Stewart have in common?

They ALL love animals and they ALL attended the DOGCATEMY CELEBRITY GALA hosted by North Shore Animal League.

It is so nice to see celebrities and people in the public eye using their exposure in a positive way.

People like Ellen DeGeneres, Charlize Theron, Hilary Swank, and Cesar Millan "The Dog Whisperer" to name just a few.

Comedian Carol Leifer Hosted North Shore Animal League America's Annual Lewyt Humane Awards Luncheon.

Beth Ostrosky-Stern ran the NYC Marathon in 2008 with "Team Animal League" helping to raise over $300,000. All proceeds benefit the Animal League's life-saving mission to find loving homes for more than 20,000 orphaned animals each year.

Mya, Grammy award-winning singer and actress is the new spokesperson for North Shore Animal Leagues tenth annual Tour For Life, a mobile pet adoption event.

    Did You Know?

North Shore Animal League is making a difference one day at a time for animals everywhere.

The League was one of the first animal rescue agencies on the ground in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and rescued more than 1400 pets.

In 2007, the League received three Chihuahuas born without front paws. They resembled pint-sized kangaroos, and got around by hopping on their back haunches. The pups were evaluated, and, in a special initiative, toy-sized aluminum wagons were custom built, allowing them to move more easily. They now live in a home with an employee of NSAL.

Every year the medical center takes care of more than 10,000 outpatient visits, administers more than 15,000 vaccinations and performs over 11,000 free spay/neuter procedures for every adopted animal, preventing over 132 million potentially unwanted litters.
